Collection: Tradition of London WWI
Tradition of London World War I toy soldiers in the classic 54mm gloss-painted English style. Where the rest of the WWI toy soldier market has moved toward muddy realism — khaki, trench coats, weathered helmets — Tradition of London tends to capture the war's opening months in 1914, when uniforms still carried the colour and tailoring of the nineteenth century. French infantry in red trousers and dark blue greatcoats. British regulars in khaki service dress but still recognisably crisp. German troops in field grey with the spiked Pickelhaube before the steel Stahlhelm replaced it. It is a deliberately romantic register, and it suits the Tradition of London look better than the late-war drab of 1917-18.
The range covers the iconic early-war units and engagements — the British Expeditionary Force, the French line infantry of the Marne, German infantry of 1914, Highland regiments, and cavalry from the war's first cavalry-heavy months before the trenches closed everything down. Scottish Highlanders in kilts at the Front, Indian Army troops in service of the Empire, and the small set-piece vignettes Tradition of London does well — a sentry at his post, an officer with a map, a bandsman.
These are 54mm gloss-painted pieces in the classic English toy soldier tradition — different in feel and scale from the 1/30 (60mm) matte-painted figures from W. Britain or King & Country. Where W. Britain's WWI range leans into the realism of the trenches and King & Country has not focused heavily on this period, Tradition of London keeps the heroic, parade-ground register that defined the actual toy soldiers boys collected before the war began.
Popular with collectors of early-war WWI subjects, the British Expeditionary Force, French and German 1914 uniforms, Highland regiments at the Front, and anyone building a Great War display in the classic English gloss style.
