Adolf Galland was the rare Luftwaffe figure who became a legend on both sides of the war. A fighter pilot who ran up 104 victories, he was promoted at just thirty to General der Jagdflieger — commander of the entire German fighter force — and used the position to argue, loudly and repeatedly, with Hermann Göring about why Germany was losing the air war. The candor cost him his job in early 1945. Rather than sit out the end, he formed JV 44, an elite squadron flying the Me 262 jet, and returned to combat as an ordinary pilot. After the war he wrote a celebrated memoir and befriended the very enemies he had once fought.

The figure captures Galland to the life — peaked cap, fur-collared leather flight jacket, and the ever-present cigar in hand, a trademark he even had rigged with a lighter in his cockpit. Stand him with the men he led, his own Luftwaffe Fighter Pilot and Bomber Pilot, and across the Channel his Battle of Britain adversary the RAF Fighter Pilot — a man from the service whose aces he later counted as friends. On an airfield diorama he is the natural centerpiece.
