The 3-inch Ordnance Rifle was the most accurate field piece in the Civil War on either side. Gunners said it could drop a shell into a flour barrel at a mile, and the claim wasn't far wrong — its wrought-iron barrel, rifled for accuracy, had an effective reach of 1,800 yards against a target the size of a regiment. The construction was unusual: bands of wrought iron wrapped around a mandrel and forge-welded into a single tough tube, lighter than bronze and far less prone to bursting than cast iron. Almost every one came from a single foundry, the Phoenix Iron Works in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, which produced about 1,000 of them between 1861 and 1865.

The model is the gun alone — a 1/30 scale 3-inch Ordnance Rifle with the distinctive matte-black wrought-iron barrel (the visual signature that distinguishes it instantly from the yellow-bronze Napoleon or 12-pdr howitzer), olive-painted oak carriage, iron-rimmed wheels, and the iron trail with handspike socket. Crew it with the four-figure 'Give 'em Another Round' Confederate gun crew or the 'Load!' Confederate Artillery with 12 Pound Howitzer set, or build a Federal battery diorama by pairing it with the Union Artillery Crewman at the breech running fuses.

W. Britain 31138 American Civil War 3-inch Ordnance Rifle No.1. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm crew compatible), matte-painted metal. Wrought-iron rifled barrel on olive-painted oak carriage with iron-rimmed wheels. No figures or accessories included. Boxed.
