Britain's most important Native alliance in the north ran through one man's house in the Mohawk Valley. William Johnson, an Irish-born trader, lived among the Mohawks, who gave him the name Warraghiyagey, usually translated as "he who does much business." His partner, Molly Brant, was the sister of the future war leader Joseph Brant. The Mohawks and the English colonies were bound by the Covenant Chain, an alliance reaching back into the 1600s, and in 1756 the Crown made Johnson its superintendent of Indian affairs. Through him, Mohawk and other Iroquois warriors fought beside the British at Lake George in 1755 and at the capture of Fort Niagara in 1759.
The chief stands at the centre with his musket grounded and his arm thrust out to direct the attack. He wears a red turban crowned with feathers, a white shirt and a red waistcoat laced in gold, likely a British gift. Around him his warriors fight: two fire standing, two kneel to fire, and three charge with a tomahawk, a war club, and a tomahawk and knife. Most have shaved heads with scalp locks, red, blue or black breechcloths, and yellow or grey leggings with red garters. One wears a long white hunting shirt. Fight them beside Rogers Rangers with Robert Rogers and The Royal American Regiment. Set them against their counterparts in American Woodland Indians (French Allies).
