Sniping was the one area where the American army lagged badly behind its enemies. Between the wars the U.S. had let the skill wither, and it went into the Second World War with no real sniper program, no dedicated school and little doctrine — while the Germans trained their marksmen carefully and the Soviets built a whole culture of celebrated snipers with proper optics. The American answer was a stopgap: the M1903A4, an old bolt-action Springfield fitted with a low-power commercial Weaver scope, its iron sights removed. It was a decent rifle with a mediocre sight, handed to men who mostly learned their trade the hard way, in combat. In the hedgerows of Normandy, where a single hidden rifleman could hold up a company, they learned fast.

The sniper moves in a low crouch, his scoped M1903A4 held ready, the 2nd Division "Indian Head" patch clear on his shoulder — a man hunting a single shot, not trading volleys. He worked best with another set of eyes, so post him with the Scout as a spotter, near the riflemen he supported like the Advancing Rifleman, and under the Sergeant who chose his ground. In a diorama a sniper is a figure of quiet menace — tuck him into a hedgerow, a window or a ruined wall and the whole scene tenses around where he might be.
