Auger de Montaut, Sire de Mussidan, appears in the roll of Gascon lords who rode with the Black Prince at Poitiers in 1356 — and to call that fighting "for the English" is to misread the whole war. Aquitaine was held by the kings of England as a fief of the French crown. A lord of Mussidan in the Périgord owed his service to the duke of Aquitaine, and the duke of Aquitaine also happened to be the king of England, so following him into the field was not treachery towards anything; it was ordinary feudal obligation working exactly as designed. What that produced in the south-west was not a national war but a long competition for the loyalty of men like Montaut, conducted lordship by lordship, with allegiances that shifted as the fortunes and the promises did. Froissart names the Gascons who served in the Prince's army, and the herald of Sir John Chandos, who wrote the life of the Black Prince, put Auger Montaut, Sire de Mussidan, among them.
Tradition of London give him a striking blue and white caparison split by a bold zigzag, lance levelled, the horse pushing off a rocky base — and if you want the single best pairing in this whole range, put him opposite Gautier VI Compte de Brienne. They were at the same battle. Montaut rode with the Prince; Brienne, Constable of France, was killed there. Add Sir John de Grailly, another Gascon in English service, and King & Country's English Archer Set for the arm that actually decided the day, and you have Poitiers from both directions on one shelf. Two lances levelled at each other across an open space is all the diorama needs.
