In the spring of 1757 Lieutenant Colonel George Monro of the 35th Foot took command of Fort William Henry at the head of Lake George. His garrison was drawn mainly from his own regiment and the Royal Americans. Montcalm arrived on 3 August and summoned him to surrender, and Monro answered that he would hold out. While the French dug their trenches and opened fire, Monro waited for help from General Daniel Webb at Fort Edward, about fifteen miles away. Webb's reply, advising him to make the best terms he could, was intercepted, and Montcalm sent it on to Monro under a flag of truce. On the morning of 9 August the fort hoisted the white flag.

Don Troiani paints a battalion soldier of the 35th standing at ease, his musket grounded beside him with the bayonet fixed. He wears a black tricorne edged in white and a red coat with the regiment's orange facings, laced with a patterned tape, over a red waistcoat and breeches. A sword hangs at his side, and brown leggings are buttoned up to the thigh for campaigning. Pair it with Tradition of London's The Royal American Regiment, the other half of Monro's garrison. Add W. Britain's French General Marquis de Montcalm, 1759 and Native Warrior with Souvenir Grenadier Cap, whose description covers what happened to the column after the surrender.
