From Mr. Troiani: The Battle of Pound Ridge , N.Y. 2 July, 1779. Although few have heard of this it was one of the largest all mounted actions of the Revolution. A mixed force under Banastre Tarleton consisting of the 17th Light Dragoons,Queens Rangers and Mounted Jagers nearly surprised the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons. It devolved in to a long running sword battle as the Patriots retreated towards Stamford and New Canaan , CT. The 2nd left their Regimental standard in the a house and Tarleton made off with it. Most likely involved over 400 troops. Causalities were fairly light despite all the hacking about. I grew up in Pound Ridge and the British may have passed by my house so always wanted to paint this. The scene here takes place above the current town park near West Lane where the road to Stamford and New Canaan divide.
