The Béarn battalion reached New France in June 1755 and was sent almost at once to Fort Frontenac, at the eastern end of Lake Ontario. Across the lake stood Oswego, the British post that threatened France's route to the west, and for a year Béarn kept watch on it. In August 1756 the battalion joined Montcalm's first campaign in Canada. Three regiments of regulars, Canadian militia and Native allies crossed the lake and laid siege to Oswego's three forts. The garrison of about 1,700 men surrendered in mid-August, giving Montcalm his first victory in America and Britain the loss of its foothold on Lake Ontario.

Don Troiani paints a soldier of Béarn standing at ease, his musket upright in front of him with both hands at the muzzle. He wears the grey-white coat of the French line with blue cuffs, a black tricorne edged in white, and a buff belt carrying his cartridge pouch and sword. Tall white gaiters are buttoned to the knee and tied with black garters. Display it with W. Britain's French Fusilier Regiment Berry, 1758 and French General Marquis de Montcalm, 1759. Add Tradition of London's French Infantry Guyenne Regiment, which crossed to Canada in the same 1755 convoy as Béarn.
