On the afternoon of July 2, 1863, Colonel Strong Vincent's brigade was in reserve when a staff officer of General Warren rode up looking for troops to hold Little Round Top. Vincent's division commander wasn't reachable. Vincent asked what the situation was, then said, "I will take responsibility for taking my brigade there." He moved his four regiments — the 20th Maine, 44th New York, 16th Michigan, and his own 83rd Pennsylvania — to the southern slope minutes before Hood's Texans came up the far side. He told Joshua Chamberlain of the 20th Maine, holding the extreme left, "You are to hold this ground at all costs." Vincent was killed later that afternoon at age twenty-six.

The figure is modeled on the statue at the 83rd Pennsylvania monument at Little Round Top: Vincent in Union officer's dark blue frock coat with gold epaulets, crimson sash at his waist, white gauntlets, dark blue trousers tucked into black riding boots, drawn sword in his right hand, forage cap. He was promoted from colonel to brigadier general on his deathbed. Pair Vincent with Colonel John W. McLane, his pre-war commander of the 83rd PA killed at Gaines's Mill the previous summer, with the Sergeant with Regimental Flag of his brigade, or with the Kneeling Infantryman Firing Rifle holding the line beside him.
