The grenadier's tall cloth mitre cap was the most decorated piece of a British regiment's uniform. Before 1751, colonels often had their own coats of arms embroidered on their grenadiers' caps. The clothing warrant of 1751 put a stop to that. From then on, the front of the cap was made in the regiment's facing colour and carried the king's GR cipher under a crown. A small red flap at the base bore the white horse of Hanover and the motto Nec aspera terrent, "difficulties do not deter." The back was red. Only a few old regiments kept a badge of their own, such as the green dragon of the Buffs.
All eight grenadiers in this set are firing, standing in two ranks with their muskets levelled and bayonets fixed. They wear yellow-fronted mitre caps topped with white tufts, and red coats with yellow lapels and cuffs laced in white. Brown gaiters show this is campaign dress. One man in the front rank has lost his cap, which lies on the ground at his feet, a small touch of the realities of a firefight. Post them on the right of the line, the grenadiers' place of honour, beside British Infantry, whose sergeant and privates wear the same yellow facings. Add British Infantry North America 1750 to extend the line.
