The march that carries the grenadiers' name was already old when these men fought. Its tune may go back to a seventeenth-century country dance, and it was linked to the grenadiers by 1706 as "The Granadeer's March." Words to it appeared in print around the 1750s, boasting that none of the great heroes of antiquity could match a British grenadier, and giving him the hand grenades that real grenadiers had by then mostly put aside. In 1763, the year the Seven Years War ended, it became the regimental quick march of the Grenadier Guards and of the fusilier regiments. "The British Grenadiers" is still played by the British army today.
All eight grenadiers fire together in two ranks, muskets levelled and bayonets fixed. They wear dark blue mitre caps with the gold GR cipher, a red flap and a white tuft, and red coats with dark blue lapels and cuffs laced in white. Below are dark blue breeches and white gaiters, with buff belts carrying the grenadier's brass match case. The set includes a grenadier with a bandaged head and one who has lost his cap and fires bareheaded, the cap lying at his feet. Place them on the right of the line beside British Infantry, whose sergeant and privates wear the same blue facings. Add British Infantry Eight Privates Firing for a full Minden firing line.
