At Trafalgar on 21 October 1805, every British ship of the line carried a detachment of Royal Marines under its own officer, and HMS Victory's were commanded by Captain Charles Adair. The marines lined the gangways and quarterdeck with musketry, served alongside the gun crews, and stood exposed to the French sharpshooters firing down from the Redoutable's tops — the same fire that mortally wounded Nelson. Adair was shot dead on the upper deck as he rallied his men against a boarding attempt. The Corps had been granted the title "Royal" only three years before, in 1802; Trafalgar confirmed what the honour was worth.
W. Britain stands the officer in the Royal Marines' Napoleonic dress: the red coatee with blue facings — the blue granted with the "Royal" title — gilt buttons and lace set in pairs, white breeches and black boots, a crimson silk sash at the waist and a gilt gorget at the throat. The black beaver chapeau-bras carries a feather plume above its leather cockade. He commands the Royal Marines cluster alongside the Royal Marine Sergeant and the Royal Marine Bugler who relayed his orders, with the Royal Marine in Full Dress completing a quarterdeck or parade tableau.
W. Britain model 13068. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), solid metal hand-painted in a matte finish. Single foot figure on a plain rectangular display base. Boxed.
