The recruiting slogan was "Join the Wrens and free a man for the fleet," and the women of the Women's Royal Naval Service did far more than fill in ashore. Wrens served as dispatch riders, drivers, radio and wireless operators, and cypher officers, and they sat at the heart of the naval war's secret machinery. In the operations rooms that fought the Battle of the Atlantic, Wrens moved the markers across the great plotting tables that tracked every convoy and U-boat. At Bletchley Park, thousands of them operated the Bombe machines that helped break the German Enigma cipher — quiet, exacting work that shortened the war.

The figure wears the regulation WRNS uniform — the double-breasted navy jacket with gold buttons, skirt, and badged hat — a dispatch satchel over her shoulder.
