This toy soldier set, "Here You Go Lad" – Chaplain Smith Distributing Ammunition, 1879, brings to life a dramatic moment from the legendary defense of Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War. Model 20221 is a 1/30 scale, matte finish, two-figure set complete with scenic accessories that depict a British soldier receiving ammunition from the revered Reverend George Smith.
Reverend Smith, a missionary turned assistant army chaplain, is remembered for his vital role in the defense. Though a non-combatant, he worked tirelessly throughout the battle to supply ammunition to the embattled soldiers on the barricades. His presence and efforts were instrumental, earning him the nickname “Ammunition Smith” among the ranks.
This set includes the kneeling British infantryman, a dynamic figure of Chaplain Smith extending ammunition, a sandbag barricade, a Zulu shield, and fallen spear – all expertly sculpted and painted. Though Smith could not be formally decorated for his actions due to his civilian status, he was later commissioned into the regular army as a chaplain in recognition of his bravery.
A poignant and unique piece, this set captures not only the grit of battle but also the selfless heroism of those who served beyond the front lines.
