Two-thirds of all Confederate field artillery was captured from the Union. The South could not match Federal industrial production of cannons — most American cannon foundries were in the North, and the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, the South's principal foundry, was overwhelmed by the demand. So Confederate artillery batteries equipped themselves at Union expense: a 12-pounder Napoleon captured at First Bull Run, a 3-inch Ordnance Rifle taken at Chancellorsville, a 10-pounder Parrott seized in some skirmish would all be repainted and assigned to a Confederate battery. By war's end, many Confederate batteries fielded a mixed assortment of Federal artillery pieces wearing Confederate guidons — small triangular pennants identifying the battery and its battalion.
This W. Britain figure depicts a Confederate artillery NCO carrying the battery's guidon — the small triangular pennant that identified the unit at the head of a column or above its position on the field. He wears the regulation Confederate artillery kit: gray shell jacket with red branch trim and the artillery sergeant's three-stripe red chevrons, light blue or gray trousers, the dark forage cap, and the cartridge box on his belt. The guidon is the Confederate Battle Flag pattern in miniature, gold-fringed, mounted on a tall staff. Pair this figure with Confederate Infantry with 1st Colors for a Confederate flag-evolution display; with Confederate Infantry Company Officer for a brigade-level command vignette; or with Lt. Gen. James Longstreet as the corps commander above the battery.
