The Confederacy lost a higher percentage of its men than the Union did. Roughly 258,000 Confederate soldiers died over four years of war — about a quarter of all Confederate soldiers who ever served, and a one-in-five death rate among Southern white males of military age. The Union lost more men in absolute numbers (around 360,000) but from a much larger population and military pool, producing a lower percentage. The South had no reserve to draw on after Gettysburg in the way the Federal government did; every Confederate casualty was harder to replace. By 1864, Confederate regiments that had begun the war with eight hundred men were down to two hundred, and the gap could not be closed.

This W. Britain figure depicts a fallen Confederate infantryman in mid-war kit — gray shell jacket, butternut trousers — with the scattered equipment that marks the aftermath of combat: a fallen kepi, a fallen slouch hat, two rifle muskets where they fell from the dead soldiers' hands, the cartridge box and accessories spread on the ground. The set is a diorama accessory rather than a standalone display piece, providing the sobering aftermath any complete Confederate battle scene requires. Pair this figure with Rebel Steel Confederate Charging for an attack-and-aftermath sequence; with Confederate Infantry Corporal Urging Men Forward for the moment-of-leadership-and-its-cost; or with General Robert E. Lee as the commanding general accountable for the casualties.

Scale: 1/30 (60mm). Matte-painted metal. W. Britain model 31485. From the American Civil War range. Single foot figure (casualty pose) plus scenic accessories, supplied painted and ready for display.
