The Civil War cost America two and a half percent of its total population. If a war of the same proportional scale were fought today, with the United States' current population of about 335 million, the equivalent death toll would be roughly eight million Americans dead. That is the demographic shock the country actually absorbed in 1861–1865 — and it fell more heavily on the South, where the casualty rate was higher and the surviving population smaller. For comparison: the United States lost roughly one-third of one percent of its population in World War II, and one-tenth of one percent in Vietnam. The Civil War's per-capita death rate has never been approached in any subsequent American conflict.
This W. Britain figure depicts a Confederate infantryman in the moment of being struck and falling backward — body arched, arms thrown out, slouch hat tipped off, rifle and equipment scattered as he goes down. He wears the late-war Confederate kit: gray shell jacket, light blue trousers (with visible mending — Confederate uniforms by 1864 were patched and repaired by their wearers until they fell apart), the bedroll across his back, cartridge box on his belt. The figure is the kind of close-observed casualty sculpting that anchors a diorama scene of a regiment under fire. Pair this figure with Confederate Casualty Falling for a matched moment-of-impact pair; with Confederate Casualty for the fully fallen aftermath; or with Iron Brigade Charging No.2 for the Federal soldiers whose charge brought him down.
Scale: 1/30 (60mm). Matte-painted metal. W. Britain model 31295. From the American Civil War range. Single foot figure, supplied painted and ready for display.
