The flag this soldier carries was sewn in 1861 by Charlotte Wigfall, wife of Confederate Senator and Brigadier General Louis T. Wigfall of Texas. She and her sewing circle in Richmond produced three flags — one each for the 1st, 4th, and 5th Texas Infantry regiments — and presented them to the regiments at their winter camp at Dumfries, Virginia, in December 1861. The flags followed the Confederate Battle Flag pattern but carried a single large white Lone Star at the center of the saltire, the visible mark of a Texas unit anywhere on a battlefield. The 4th Texas's Wigfall flag was carried at Gaines's Mill, Second Manassas, South Mountain, and Antietam before being retired from combat use and replaced by a Richmond Depot Third Bunting Issue flag for the remainder of the war.

This W. Britain figure depicts the 4th Texas Infantry flagbearer in regulation Confederate gray — single-breasted gray frock coat with gold-laced sleeves, gray-blue trousers, the slouch hat with gold cord, the cartridge box and belt, and the bayonet at his left hip. The flag is the 1st Issue Wigfall pattern, with the white Lone Star prominent against the red field and blue saltire. The flagbearer was the highest-mortality position in any Civil War regiment — the flag was the rallying point, the formation marker, the visual command center, and every enemy musket aimed at it deliberately. The figure anchors a Texas Brigade diorama: paired with the matching 1st Texas and 5th Texas flagbearers in the range, the three Wigfall-pattern flags reproduce the brigade's original colors as they appeared at the Antietam Cornfield in September 1862. Pair this figure with 1st Texas Flagbearer (Wigfall Pattern); with 5th Texas Flagbearer; or with Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, the I Corps commander under whom the Texas Brigade served from the Seven Days through Appomattox.
