In 1859 the U.S. Army adopted a single breasted nine button frock coat for all branches of service. These coats, and the simplified 1861 version, were widely copied by both Northern and Southern militias early in the war. Although various Confederate depots made frock coats for general issue, many of the frock coats were made by the families back home and sent to a soldier at the front as part of the commutation system. This soldier wears a typical frock with a nine button pattern front. These coats were typically made of wool or jean cloth and only lined in the upper body and the sleeves. Although some examples had piping or tape trim, this one is plain and could represent a soldier from several different Southern states.
