The slouch hat was not Confederate regulation. Confederate regulations specified a French chasseur-pattern kepi for infantry, the same close-fitting headgear the Federal army issued, but Confederate soldiers preferred the wide-brimmed civilian felt hat — and Confederate officers allowed them to wear it. The slouch hat kept the sun off the neck and shoulders, shed rain better than a kepi's small bill, and gave the wearer a recognizable visual silhouette that became, over four years of campaigning, the most familiar image of a Confederate soldier. Many slouch hats were domestically produced in tan or gray; many of the black felt examples were imported from England through the blockade. The hat in this figure is a typical tan-felt example.
This W. Britain figure depicts a Confederate infantryman advancing in the firing position — body angled forward, rifle musket leveled at his shoulder, mid-stride into action. He wears the regulation Confederate kit cut from high-quality British imported cloth: light gray-blue shell jacket, light blue trousers in good condition, tan felt slouch hat with broad brim. The bedroll crosses his chest, the cartridge box and holstered pistol ride on his belt. The figure works in any Confederate advance or firing line diorama. Pair this figure with Confederate Infantry Standing Firing for the standing firing companion; with Confederate Corporal Urging Men Forward as the NCO directing the advance; or with 1st Texas Flagbearer (3rd Issue) for the regimental colors.
