The "depot jacket" was the regulation Confederate-issue garment by mid-war. After the commutation system proved inadequate to clothe the army, the Confederate Quartermaster Department established central clothing depots in Richmond, Atlanta, Columbus, and Houston that produced standardized shell jackets in large quantities. The Richmond Depot was the most prolific, manufacturing three distinct types over the war: Type I in 1862 with cuff and collar facings; Type II in 1863, simplified, without facings; Type III in 1864–65, simpler still as cloth and labor grew scarce. Each type had subtle differences collectors and veterans could identify at a glance. The figure in this set wears a Richmond Depot pattern jacket — what a Confederate soldier received when supplies actually reached him.

This W. Britain figure depicts a Confederate infantryman on the march in a Richmond Depot–pattern shell jacket — light gray cloth, no facings (a Type II or Type III), worn over a brown civilian vest. He wears matching light gray trousers, a gray forage cap, white gaiters over his shoes. The bedroll across his chest is the gray-and-striped pattern of a home-issued or captured Federal blanket. He carries his rifle musket vertical, both hands on the barrel, in a casual march carry. The figure works as part of any Confederate marching column or regimental front diorama. Pair this figure with Confederate Infantry Marching with Knapsack Wearing Depot Jacket for a matched same-uniform pair; with Confederate Corporal Marching as the NCO beside him; or with Confederate Infantry Drummer Marching for the column's cadence.
