A Confederate officer's saber was usually personal. Confederate regulations specified the staff and field officer's sword pattern adopted from the U.S. Army, but Confederate officers — particularly newly commissioned company officers from the planter class — often carried sabers they had inherited, purchased from local cutlers, or had presented to them by their hometown. Some were handsome silver-mounted blades from England or France; some were domestic Southern-made copies of the regulation pattern; some were antique family heirlooms from previous American wars. The Confederate Quartermaster Department made no attempt to standardize what an officer carried. The drawn saber visible in this figure is the personal weapon a Confederate officer chose to take to war.
This W. Britain figure depicts a Confederate infantry officer in mid-advance — saber drawn and raised high in his right hand, left arm extended forward to point out the direction of attack. He wears the regulation Confederate officer's kit: tan frock coat with gold-laced sleeve trim, light blue trousers, broad-brimmed slouch hat. The blue-and-white spotted item across his chest is likely a printed silk neck stock or personal handkerchief — an officer's individual touch. The holstered revolver and personal saber complete his combat kit. Pair this figure with Confederate Infantry Company Officer for a paired Confederate officer scene; with Confederate Corporal Urging Men Forward as the NCO he is directing; or with Rebel Steel Confederate Charging for the men he is leading forward.
