The army's daily routine was unchanging: reveille at dawn, roll call, breakfast, morning drill, dinner at noon, afternoon drill or fatigue duty (cutting wood, digging latrines, building roads), supper, evening dress parade, taps at night. Sundays brought religious services and sometimes mail. The standard ration when supplies arrived was a pound of cornmeal or hardtack, three-quarters of a pound of bacon or salt pork, plus beans, coffee (Federal only), and tobacco. Between drills, soldiers wrote letters home, played cards, repaired clothing, and waited.
