The Texas Brigade lost John Bell Hood at Gettysburg. Hood — the brigade's founding commander, by then commanding the division of which the Texas Brigade was a part — was struck in the left arm by Union shrapnel within minutes of his attack starting on July 2, 1863. The shrapnel left his arm permanently disabled. He was carried off the field before his troops reached Devil's Den or the slopes of Little Round Top. Command of the division passed to Brigadier General Evander Law of the Alabama brigade. The Texans, under their own brigade commander Brigadier General Jerome Robertson, fought through the boulder field at Devil's Den and up to the base of Little Round Top, where Union infantry finally stopped them.
