Continental Line/1st American Regiment
Continental Line/1st American Regiment
This toy soldier is a part of the Continental Line/1st American Regiment Company Officer Advancing with Spontoon, 1777-87.
The officer depicted in this figure is carrying a spontoon, a weapon that originated from earlier pole arms when they were the only weapon carried by foot soldiers. During the late 18th century, polearms such as the sergeant's halberd and the officer's spontoons were primarily used as symbols of rank and were not commonly used in service in North America.
Despite this, the tradition of carrying a spontoon continued in both the British and early American Army well into the first quarter of the 19th century, although it was typically only used for full dress occasions in North America. The spontoon served as a way to easily identify officers in the midst of a large formation of infantry and could also be used for signaling or dressing the lines during movement.
This 1/30 scale figure features a matte finish and is a one-piece set. It is a perfect addition to any collection of historical toy soldiers and accurately represents the traditions and customs of the Continental Line/1st American Regiment during the late 18th century. Add this finely crafted toy soldier to your collection today.
