The Union left flank on July 2, 1863, was nearly lost. Hood's Confederate division had come around the southern end of the Army of the Potomac's line and was driving toward the high ground at the southern end of Cemetery Ridge — the unoccupied hill called Little Round Top. Colonel Strong Vincent's brigade of the V Corps reached the hill minutes ahead of the Confederate attack and deployed along its slope. Colonel Patrick O'Rorke's 140th New York arrived seconds later and counter-charged into the gap on the brigade's right. Both colonels fell within minutes of each other in the close-range musketry that followed — O'Rorke killed instantly, Vincent mortally wounded and dying five days later. Their regiments held. Little Round Top stayed in Union hands.
This W. Britain set depicts two Union infantrymen defending the rocky slope of Little Round Top — both kneeling among the boulders, rifles aimed forward, dark blue Federal infantry kit, dark forage caps, light blue trousers. The two scenic boulders included in the set complete the rocky terrain of the position. The set is the Union half of the W. Britain Round Tops series, designed to pair with the Confederate "Scrambling Up the Round Tops" sets and with the named officer figures for a multi-figure Little Round Top diorama. Pair this set with Scrambling Up the Round Tops, the matching Confederate scene; with Col. William C. Oates, the 15th Alabama commander whose regiment attacked this position; or with Defending the Round Tops No.2, the companion Union scene.
