The 442nd Regimental Combat Team fought under the motto "Go for Broke," and no American unit its size fought harder. It was made up almost entirely of Nisei — second-generation Japanese-Americans — and many of its soldiers volunteered from behind the wire of the internment camps where their own families were held. In October 1944 the regiment drove into the Vosges mountains to reach the "Lost Battalion," a surrounded Texas outfit, and took some 800 casualties to bring out about 200 men. By war's end the 442nd was the most decorated unit of its size in U.S. history — more than 4,000 Purple Hearts and 21 Medals of Honor.
