On 11 November 1778 a force of Seneca warriors, Butler's Rangers, British regulars and a small Mohawk party under Joseph Brant struck the settlement of Cherry Valley, New York. It was garrisoned by the 7th Massachusetts, a Continental regiment under Colonel Ichabod Alden. Alden had been warned that an attack was coming but did little to prepare, and he and his officers were quartered in houses outside the fort. When the raiders arrived, Seneca warriors surrounded his house. Alden was cut down running for the fort, and his second-in-command was taken prisoner. The raid, and the killing of civilians that came with it, led to General John Sullivan's campaign against the Iroquois towns the following year.

This two-figure set catches the moment the fight is lost. The warrior has seized the Continental soldier by the arm and swings a ball-headed war club down at him, while the soldier stumbles forward, his hat flying off and his musket useless behind him. The warrior wears a red roach headdress, silver armbands, a red breechcloth trimmed in yellow and dark blue leggings with yellow garters. The soldier wears the fringed linen hunting shirt many Continental regiments adopted as field dress, with a cartridge box, canteen and dark overalls.
