In September 1759 General Jeffery Amherst sent Major Robert Rogers north from Crown Point with about 200 men to strike St. Francis, the Abenaki town near the St. Lawrence whose warriors had raided the New England frontier for decades. The party rowed down Lake Champlain, hid its boats at Missisquoi Bay and set out overland through spruce bog. French scouts found the boats, cutting off the way back. Rogers attacked the town at dawn on 4 October and burned it, then turned his men south toward the Connecticut River. The supplies he expected to find waiting there had gone, and the retreat became a march of starvation in which many rangers died.
This two-figure set puts a pair of rangers in ambush on a base of grey rock and a weather-bent dead tree. One lies prone with his musket laid across the rocks, sighting on his target. The other crouches behind the trunk with his musket in one hand and his other arm over the branch, watching for the moment to fire. Both wear the green jackets that became common in the Rangers from 1758, with close-fitting caps and leggings. For a full ambush scene, add Rogers' Rangers Standing Firing, No.1 and Rogers' Rangers Private, 1758 along the rocks. Then bring Native Warrior Walking with Caution down the trail toward them.
