The official Confederate uniform was supposed to look like the Federal uniform. Confederate uniform regulations published in 1861 specified gray jackets and sky-blue trousers — the sky-blue trousers were a direct holdover from the pre-war U.S. Army uniform, which Confederate quartermasters had every reason to copy. The intent was that the Confederate army would look like a national army in the European style. Reality interfered. By 1862 Confederate dye and cloth shortages meant most Confederate enlisted soldiers wore whatever color trouser their regiment had been issued, ranging from light blue to butternut to gray to brown — sometimes within the same company. The two figures in this set wear the regulation sky-blue trousers, suggesting newer issue or longer-supplied regiments.

This W. Britain two-figure set depicts a pair of Confederate infantrymen marching — both in gray shell jackets and the regulation sky-blue trousers, one wearing a forage cap and the other a broad-brimmed slouch hat. Both carry rifle muskets slung over their right shoulders with bayonets fixed, the bedrolls and haversacks across their chests, cartridge boxes on their belts. The set is a foundation piece for any Confederate marching column or regimental line diorama — multiplied with the brigade's other marching figures, it builds out a complete regiment in motion.
