Every French line battalion carried its own elite, and these are they. A battalion was built of six companies: four of ordinary fusiliers in the center, and on the wings two "flank" companies of picked men — the voltigeurs, small and agile, who skirmished ahead on the left, and the grenadiers, the biggest and most experienced, who held the place of honour on the right. The grenadiers were the battalion's shock troops, the men sent in when a position had to be taken at the point of the bayonet, marked out by their red epaulettes and red-plumed shakos. A line regiment did not need the Imperial Guard to find hard men; it grew its own, one company to a battalion.

The eight-figure set is the grenadier company in the attack — an officer, a drummer, and six grenadiers advancing with bayonets, in dark blue coats with red epaulettes and red-plumed shakos. It is the elite right flank of a French line diorama. Put it at the head of the assault with the French Line Infantry Fusiliers Running charging alongside, the French Line Infantry advancing in support, and the French Line Infantry colour party carried behind.
