Before he was a legend, George Patton was a cavalryman, an Olympian, and a swordsman. He competed in the modern pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, designed the Army's last combat sword — the "Patton Saber" — and was wounded leading the fledgling tank corps in 1918. In 1943 he took American troops from the humiliation of Kasserine Pass to the conquest of Sicily, racing his Seventh Army to Messina ahead of the British. That same summer, in Sicily, he slapped two shell-shocked soldiers in field hospitals — an outburst that nearly ended his career and saw him sidelined before D-Day. Brilliant, driven, and volatile, Patton was never a simple man to command.

The figure shows him in his 1943 Mediterranean turnout — olive service tunic, khaki riding breeches and cavalry boots, overseas cap, a riding crop in hand and an ivory-gripped pistol on his hip. Set him among the Allied commanders whose orbit he strained: his chief General Eisenhower, his Sicily rival Field Marshal Montgomery, and General Bradley.
