The Germans called it the Gulaschkanone โ€” the goulash cannon โ€” from 1914, and the name is a joke about the chimney. Folded down for the road, the long flue lay back along the top and the whole thing looked like a gun being towed. The goulash was real enough too: a Hungarian dish Germany had adopted in the eighteenth century, and one fed to German troops throughout the war. But the joke is not the point of the machine. The point is that the fire was lit while the horses pulled. A GroรŸe Feldkรผche cooked on the march and had hot food for hundreds of men at the moment the column stopped walking.

Twenty pieces, and W. Britain has counted the small ones. The kitchen and its limber; three men, two of them in cooks' whites; milk churns, cans, buckets, a crate, a strap, a folding table, ladles. And a chicken, which did not come with the kit. In a diorama it sits at the middle of the German food cluster โ€” What's on the Menu Tonight and Music to Peel By are the same men earlier in the day โ€” while the British infantryman with his cup of tea is the same problem in another army.

W. Britain model 23101. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Twenty-piece set โ€” the Hf.11 field kitchen with limber, three figures and accessories. Limited edition of 400 sets. Boxed.
