The missing shield tells a story. The 88's curved gun shield was crew armor — protection against rifle fire and shell splinters when the gun fought at the front, dueling tanks across open ground where it drew fire in return. But a great many 88s never saw a tank. Sited in fixed emplacements deep inside Germany for air defense, they faced only aircraft miles overhead and had no need of splinter protection. Late in the war, with material scarce and worn guns cycling back through depots for rebuild, the shield was often simply left off — a small economy repeated across thousands of weapons.

The sixteen-piece set gives the gun stripped of its shield in a dark late-war finish, with clips, crates and loose rounds. Stand it beside its shielded twin, the Flak 37 with Late War Carriage, to show the difference at a glance, and against the early grey Flak 36/37 for the full progression. Crew it for the air-defense role with Surveying the Field — spotters searching the sky — and build a static flak pit rather than a front-line anti-tank position.

W. Britain model 25182. 1/30 scale, matte-painted metal. Sixteen-piece set — the 88mm Flak 37 gun rebuilt without its crew shield, in late-war finish, with ammunition. Boxed.
