Germany led the world in battlefield camouflage, and the reversible winter parka was one of its neatest ideas. Printed in a disruptive pattern on one face and plain white on the other, it let a soldier turn himself inside out to match his surroundings — white for fresh snow, mottled camo for bare woods, thawing ground, or a village of grey rubble. This grenadier wears the camouflage side out, blending into dark timber rather than snow. German camouflage clothing, pioneered in the 1930s and spread widely through the Waffen-SS and later the whole army, ran years ahead of the plain olive drab and khaki most Allied soldiers still wore — and it made a hidden man that much harder to see.
