The popular picture of the German army is all roaring tanks, but the reality moved mostly on foot and hoof. Only a minority of German divisions were ever fully motorized; the great mass of the infantry marched, and its guns, wagons, and supplies were hauled by horses — millions of them served the Wehrmacht across the war, more than in any earlier German army. The ordinary grenadier got where he was going much as his father had in 1914, on his own two feet, with a bolt-action Mauser in his hands. Behind the Blitzkrieg headlines, this running rifleman in his greatcoat is the truer face of the German army: a foot soldier, marching.
