There were two philosophies of the hand grenade, and the German stick grenade shows one of them. It was an "offensive" grenade — a blast weapon that stunned and shocked with concussion and threw little shrapnel, so a soldier could hurl it and keep advancing without being cut down by his own fragments. The Allied Mills bomb and the American "pineapple" took the opposite approach, spraying lethal fragments and meant to be thrown from cover. To arm the German grenade, a soldier unscrewed the base cap and yanked a pull-cord that lit a friction fuse, giving him about four and a half seconds — long enough to throw, short enough that an enemy could not easily throw it back.

The figure lies prone, arm cocked back to sling the stick grenade, his 98k beside him in the snow. Set the close fight around him: pair him with the Grenadier Advancing with Grenade and the Grenadier Advancing Cautiously, against the rushing American U.S. Infantryman.
