An infantry section's firepower runs on ammunition, and the German section had one great advantage in supplying it: a single cartridge fed almost everything. The 7.92×57mm Mauser round — adopted back in 1903 and carried through both World Wars — chambered the K98 rifle, the G43, and the belt-fed MG34 and MG42 machine guns alike, so one type of ammunition kept the whole section shooting. It arrived in sturdy wooden crates of 1,500 rounds, split into cardboard "battle packs" of 300 that dropped neatly into steel cans to keep them dry. Carrying those cans forward — heavy, awkward, and always needed — was the unglamorous work that kept the guns from falling silent.
