In the spring of 1743 the Highland regiment was marched south to London, believing the king would review it. On arrival the men found George II was on the Continent, and a rumour spread that they were to be shipped to the West Indies, which was not the service they had enlisted for. In May about a hundred of them met on Finchley Common and set out to walk home to the Highlands. Cavalry overtook them near Northampton, and they surrendered after talks. All were sentenced to death. Corporals Samuel and Malcolm Macpherson and Private Farquhar Shaw were shot at the Tower of London. The rest were sent to garrisons overseas.
All eight grenadiers fire together in two ranks, muskets levelled and bayonets fixed. They wear tall black fur caps with red fronts, red coats with the buff facings and white lace of the 42nd before 1758, and dark Government-sett tartan with leather sporrans. Broadswords hang at their hips, and their hose is diced red and white. They are the grenadiers' firing line to go with Grenadier Company 42nd Highland Regiment, whose officer and sergeant lead the advance. Add 42nd Highland Regiment and 42nd Highland Regiment of Foot, and all four sets form a full battalion in buff facings.
