Mary Custis Lee made her husband's headquarters flag. Robert E. Lee's wife — and her daughters Mary, Annie, Agnes, and Mildred — sewed the flag in the summer of 1862 at the family's home at Arlington House, which had already been seized by Federal authorities and would become Arlington National Cemetery before the war ended. The flag was modeled on the Stars and Bars but with thirteen white stars arranged in a "Bread of Life" pattern on the blue canton — eleven stars for the seceded Confederate states plus Kentucky and Missouri, which the Confederacy claimed. Lee flew it over his field headquarters from June 1862 until the Confederate Second National Flag replaced it in the summer of 1863.
