On the afternoon of December 13, 1862, the Army of the Potomac sent brigade after brigade across an open plain at Fredericksburg toward a stone wall at the base of Marye's Heights. Confederate infantry stood four ranks deep behind the wall with artillery on the ridge above. The 83rd Pennsylvania went in with the V Corps late in the day. Like every Union unit that tried it, the regiment never reached the wall. The survivors went to ground in a shallow swale a few dozen yards short and lay there through a freezing night, pinned among the dead and wounded of the earlier attacks. Fredericksburg showed how costly a frontal charge had become against rifled muskets behind cover.

The figure is running at full stride, his rifle musket leveled at the waist with the bayonet out in front and his head pushed forward toward the objective. He's carrying his whole kit into the attack: knapsack, blanket roll, cartridge box, and canteen, all over K&C's 83rd Pennsylvania uniform of dark blue chasseur jacket with yellow trim, green shoulder tufts, sky-blue trousers, and white gaiters, with a red corps badge on his forage cap.
