The M1 Garand loaded in a way no other rifle did, and it made a sound the war never forgot. Its eight rounds came in a single sheet-metal "en-bloc" clip, pressed into the receiver as a unit; when the last round fired, the empty clip sprang out with a bright metallic ping. A famous story holds that German soldiers learned to listen for that ping — the signal a GI was empty — and rush him before he could reload, and that canny Americans threw spare clips to fake the sound and bait the enemy out. How often either happened in the din of real battle is much debated. But one drawback was real: you could not easily top off a partial clip, so a GI often fired off his last rounds just to load fresh.

The rifleman drops to one knee in the snow and settles the M1 into his shoulder, long overcoat pooling behind him, helmet netting frosted — a steadier, lower firing position than standing, and a smaller target. Kneeling and standing together make a firing line with real depth: pair him with the Standing Rifleman, add the Grenadier mid-throw, and back them with the Four Man Patrol moving up. Along a snowy embankment or a shattered treeline, mixed firing postures give a diorama the look of a squad fighting rather than posing.
