Lee commanded by intent. He set the strategic objective, walked his corps commanders through the map at his headquarters tent, and then trusted them to execute. The most famous such conference was the night of May 1, 1863, at Chancellorsville: Lee and Jackson sat on cracker boxes by a small fire and planned the flank march that would put Jackson's corps behind Hooker's right wing the next morning. Twelve hours later Jackson's men struck the Federal flank in the greatest tactical surprise of the war. It worked because Lee trusted Jackson to execute, and because Jackson trusted Lee to set the right objective.

The eight-figure set arranges Robert E. Lee at the center in his gray frock coat and slouch hat, gesturing over a field map table at the rolled maps. His corps and division commanders stand around him — General George E. Pickett (recognizable by his elaborate frock coat and ringleted hair), General J.E.B. Stuart with cavalry-yellow trim, an artillery officer with red kepi, staff officer with ledger, Virginia cavalryman, and color bearer with the Army of Northern Virginia battle flag. The map-table prop ties the whole set together as a council of war in miniature. Pair it with the matching Union command scene Lincoln and His Generals, or set it as the high-command backdrop to Confederate Infantry with Color Bearer.
