Everything about the SS came back to a single idea: loyalty. On his belt buckle every SS man carried the order's motto — "Meine Ehre heißt Treue," "My honour is loyalty" — and he had sworn an oath to match. But the SS pledged its loyalty not to Germany, nor to any constitution or law, but to Adolf Hitler in person, vowing him "obedience unto death." That distinction was the whole point. By binding its members to one man rather than a country or a code, the SS turned loyalty into absolute obedience — a licence to carry out any order, however criminal, and the moral machinery that let an organisation of educated men take part in genocide.

K&C's figure is a Leibstandarte staff officer at ease, hands folded behind his back, in the black SS dress uniform — marked, as the copy notes, by the braided aiguillettes over the right shoulder that denote an aide-de-camp or headquarters role. He belongs with the collection's other black-uniformed officers, the SS Inspection Officer and the SS-Brigadeführer, and the men at the top of the order they all served, Himmler and Heydrich. In a display of the SS he is the quiet functionary — the reminder that the machinery of the regime ran on officers exactly this composed.
