J.E.B. Stuart's plumed hat was famous enough that losing it became one of the best stories of the war. On August 18, 1862, Federal cavalry surprised Stuart and his staff at a farmhouse at Verdiersville, Virginia. Stuart got away by jumping his horse over a fence, but he left his hat, plume and all, and his cloak behind, and the Union troopers took them as trophies. Four days later Stuart got even. In a night raid on John Pope's headquarters wagons at Catlett's Station, his men captured Pope's dress uniform coat along with his papers. Stuart reportedly offered to trade the coat for his hat. Pope never answered, and Stuart had the coat displayed in Richmond.
The figure shows Stuart in the style he made his own: a tan slouch hat with a black ostrich plume, a gray-blue shell jacket, buff gauntlets, and tall black boots, riding a bay horse with white stockings. His saddle blanket is edged in gold and marked with a general's stars, and his saber and canteen hang at his side. Pair him with General Robert E. Lee, who called Stuart the eyes of his army, with the Confederate Cavalry Officer under his command, or with W. Britain's Dismounted Confederate 1st Virginia Cavalryman from Stuart's first regiment.
