The Virginia state flag adopted in April 1861 carried the Roman motto "Sic Semper Tyrannis" — "Thus Always to Tyrants" — under an allegorical seal of Virtus standing over a vanquished king. Virginia's seal had used the design since 1776; the new state flag put it on a blue field to mark the Old Dominion's secession from the United States and entry into the Confederacy. The flag traveled with Virginia regiments through the war. After Lee's surrender it traveled with the Lost Cause back into Virginia memory. Four years and four days after the war began, John Wilkes Booth reportedly shouted "Sic Semper Tyrannis" as he jumped from the President's box at Ford's Theatre. The motto stayed on the flag.
This W. Britain figure depicts a Confederate infantryman marching with the state of Virginia flag — gray frock coat made of domestic Confederate cloth, light blue trousers in imported English material (a typical mix-and-match by 1863), the dark forage cap, the cartridge box and haversack on his belt. The flag carries the seal of Virtus over the fallen king on a blue field. The figure is the visual centerpiece of any Virginia-state-flag display, a Confederate regimental color guard, or a Lee's Army of Northern Virginia diorama. Pair this figure with Confederate Infantry with 1st Colors for state-and-national-flag pairing; with General Robert E. Lee, the Virginia native who chose Virginia over the United States in April 1861; or with Defiant Confederate Infantry with ANV Flag for a multi-flag Confederate vignette.
