The airborne medic's war began the moment he jumped — scattered behind enemy lines with the paratroopers, far from any aid station, carrying what he could on his back. At Bastogne the situation turned desperate. Early in the siege the Germans overran the 101st's main field hospital, capturing most of its surgeons and supplies in a single stroke, and the surrounded town filled with wounded who could not be evacuated. The remaining medics and a few volunteers worked on through it in cellars and a battered church, short of everything — plasma, instruments, morphine, even bandages — doing what they could until the corridor finally opened and help got through. Few jobs at Bastogne took more quiet courage.
