The green coat this grenadier rams a charge into nearly got him killed by his own side. Nassau uniforms were cut in the French style and colored a dark green close to that of French light troops, and at the very end of Waterloo it caused a deadly confusion. As Blücher's Prussians pushed onto the field at dusk near Papelotte and Smohain, they took the green-coated Nassauers of Saxe-Weimar's brigade for retreating French and opened fire on them — allies shooting allies in the smoke and failing light. It took urgent signals to stop it. On a coalition battlefield of a dozen uniforms, telling friend from foe was its own kind of danger.

The figure stands at the third motion of loading — ramrod drawn and driving ball and cartridge down the barrel before the musket comes up to fire. He wears the Nassau green with yellow lace and the black fur cap with red plume. Drop him into a Nassau firing line between the loader and the firer: a Nassau Grenadier Reaching for Cartridge ahead of him drawing the round, a Nassau Grenadier Kneeling Firing delivering the shot, and a Nassau Grenadier Drummer beating the time behind the rank.
