The device on this yellow flag is older than most of the crowns that fought at Waterloo. It is the golden lion of Nassau — a gold lion on a field strewn with gold billets — the arms of a comital house that traces back to the twelfth century, and the same lion the senior Orange-Nassau branch carried into the royal arms of the Netherlands, where it stands to this day. For the green-coated grenadiers of a small German duchy, fighting far from home in someone else's coalition, the colour was the duchy made visible: a scrap of silk that said which dynasty, which homeland, and which centuries of loyalty a man was standing his ground for.

The figure carries the yellow Nassau colour on its staff, dressed in the green coat with yellow lace and the black fur cap with red plume, one hand resting on his hip. The colour was the heart of a regiment, so it sits at the heart of a Nassau diorama — build the colour party around it with a Nassau Grenadier Officer at its side, a Nassau Grenadier Drummer beating the time, and a Nassau Grenadier Kneeling Firing anchoring the line the flag rallies.
